"Deer’s Glade Caravan Park and Camping Site is an exciting venture which opened in 2004. It is a quiet, rural, family-run caravan park and camping site set in a beautiful woodland clearing in north Norfolk, UK, catering for touring caravans, motorhomes and tents – a perfect venue for relaxing holiday in the countryside! The caravan park and camping site has a natural play area for children, a fishing lake, dog walks, two high-class shower/toilet blocks, and an on-site shop. You can come and enjoy cycling around quiet country lanes, trying to spot the local wild deer, fishing in our lake, or peaceful walks. Available locally are horse riding, swimming, tennis, gyms and cycle hire"

Glum Camping at Deers Glade: not the experience we wanted!
I'll admit that this is the first time we've camped in a public campsite AND I'll admit it was a last-minute booking and everywhere else we tried was full, BUT this campsite doesn't understand the differing needs of its various customer segments. When I booked I was asked if we wanted electrical hook-up. I said definitely not, we're a family of 4 in a tent so the wilder the better. So imagine our dismay when we were shown to a pitch surrounded by 3 large motorhomes, all of which had plasma TVs (permanently turned to the football) and every other domestic comfort, including patios (?!), rotary washing lines, tubs of flowers and birdbaths. I have no problem with people doing this kind of camping, and I freely admit that the motorhome owners may have been as dismayed with their new neighbours as we were with them, but this isn't the sort of camping we wanted to be be doing. And it certainly isn't the 'happy camping' type of experience you promote. (You've heard of 'glam camping' - for my husband in particular, this was glum camping!) I'll admit the facilities are very clean and the staff friendly (although I was waiting for someone to ask if we enjoyed our stay and no-one did!) but for this campsite to deserve it's place on the Happy Campers website it needs to try harder to meet different client needs. If I'd been told on the phone that the only pitch they had was effectively in a trailer park, I'd have saved my £17.50 and booked elsewhere. Camping on their Muntjac Meadow might be a different experience, but only if you catch it on the one month a year it's open. I guess we've learned lessons about doing our research and finding out exactly what sort of pitch we're being offered before we pay our money. But as far as we're concerend, this campsite hasn't earned its place on the Happy Campers website. (We have the book, by the way, and love it!)
