In Ravenstonedale village (a short walk away) are 2 country pubs serving meals, a village grocery shop, public tennis court, 9/18 hole golf course, and a small art gallery. There are plenty of interesting local walks and rides. Nearby you can also go pony trekking or trout fishing - catch one and barbeque it later (the trout not the pony!)
There is good access to the Eden Valley, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales but none of the hustle and bustle... Camping as it used to be!
We stayed for a couple of nights in late-July and enjoyed views of dry-stone walls, lots of sheep, rolling hills and bigger peaks. We bought logs from the farmer to build a roaring campfire (fire pits are provided) and toasted our marshmallows and our toes in our little circle of four tents all alone - it seems this site is largely undiscovered.
Although the site is remote and unspoilt, facilities are good. Unlimited hot showers and civilised washing-up facilities are provided by the (very clean) static caravan near the farmhouse. The caravan also has a comfortable lounge area, which we gathered in at one point as somewhere dry to spread our maps out.
There are plenty of really nice walks in the area: we went up The Calf which was beautiful and ample justification for indulging in a big meal in the local pub. The village of Ravenstonedale is a short walk through the fields or a very short drive away. It has a tiny shop selling everything and a pub, The Black Swan, which serves good beer (including both Black Sheep Bitter and Black Sheep Ale!), and big portions of remarkably delicious food.
If, like us, you prefer to camp away from screaming children, loud radios and ranks of ugly caravans, and enjoy a real campfire, the company of your friends, plenty of beer and space to throw a frisbee, Low Greenside is a perfect choice.
THANKS TO Amanda, Mark and Dazzle FOR THE TIPOFF! LOVE THE HC'S
