Drove here in the glorious Friday evening sunshine, along the endorphin-raising Wrynose Pass, and pitched up. Feels really remote and scenery is really beautiful - was not disappointed! If you love walking, you will love it. If you love gazing at mother’s nature finery, you will also love it.
Had our dinner in candlelight (they do allow campfires BTW, which we did not do - you can buy kindling at Ulpha post office 3 miles down the road) with a bottle of wine and a few beers. Very relaxing and romantic. Felt quite giddy with excitement!
Woke up the next morning to the sound of sheep baaing. Very cute. However, alas, the sunshine didn’t last. Next day’s weather turned very rainy and windy, which made it much more difficult. Esp since our spot was very much in an open field. Would recommend more sheltered area (e.g. 2nd field) to protect from the elements. After trying to secure the tent that had somehow turned into a kite in the gusts of wind, we decided to be truly hardcore and stay the night.
Pub close by (Newfield Inn) has lovely atmosphere and food. Def recommend. Totally yummy homemade spinach and ricotta cheese dish. Delicious!
Used the facilities which were clean and modern. Showers £1 for 3 mins. Don’t forget your pound coins! Good pressure and clean facilities. Farm owners are also nice and friendly.
All in all, I would definitely recommend Turner Hall Farm. Great to get away from it all, but without sacrificing on nice warm showers! Would return – hopefully next time the weather will be less miserable.
Go!
It was a great campsite, secluded pitches even on a busy weekend. But alas, NO CAMP FIRES are now allowed!! It would have been my favorite camp of all time if it were not for this. The new shower block was great, hot water & very clean. Local pub did great food & ales.
Just a note that campfires are NOT allowed even though this site says they are.
The showers and toilets were clean and there is a hot water tap to do your dishes at.
It's all pretty basic but has everything you need really. There is a post office about 2 miles down the road which sells food and essentials.
The site is a great place to start many walks from - we did the walk up the Walna Scar Road and then up Brown Pike, Buck Pike and Dow crag before dropping down to the eastern edge of Seathwaite Tarn and walking along the bridle path back to the campsite (about 8 miles). Great fun.
When you get there just pitch your tent and you pay at around 9am in the morning when someone comes round and wakes you up. THANKS TO JOE_FOX FROM THE HC PEEPS. WE HAVE NOW UPDATED THE CAMPFIRE SITUATION
Brilliant place - wonderful views, quiet & peaceful, well priced and away from the 'camper-van brigade'. Plenty of room even at bank holiday.
Dont take any notice of the moaners who complain about the 'lack of pitches' & long grass - the beauty about this place is there ARN'T any formal pitches! - it's a cumbrian field with huge rocks & hummocks & even a stream running through, so what do you expect!.
Pub (Newfield Inn) does get busy for food at weekend or if raining - portions are HUGE - best advise is to get there 6:30 bag a table and have a beer or 2 while you wait. Great place - will be back again soon I hope.
