IN THE WORDS OF;
Ben Tarring on Tom's Field, Dorset
The Observer Sunday January 14 2007
The perfect campsite
My abiding memory of Tom's Field is not so much of the campsite itself but of the adjoining field - a large, undulating meadow that seems to transform all who enter it over the rickety stile: children are instantly joyful, parents link hands, bicycles go faster and Frisbees fly seemingly impossible distances. Follow the path through the field and there is Dancing Ledge and the sea. The campsite is the epitome of no frills: tents (no camper vans) set in two fields, surrounded by dry stone walls and with plenty of room for impromptu cricket matches. The shop is small but perfectly formed, the washing area basic. Eco-friendliness abounds, with can crushers, recycling bins, an emphasis on public transport and local produce and, new this year, the shop no longer stocks plastic bags. And all this in the middle of the Purbeck hills and just a few miles from Corfe Castle, Swanage, cream teas, fossil-strewn beaches and the whistle of the Swanage steam train. A back-to-basics seaside holiday, and all the better for it.
tent and motorvans only
Dogs on leads at all times. This is an absolute. There are no exceptions.
No open fires. Barbeques are allowed if off the ground and protected.

We loved it! But off season the shop is not brilliantly stocked. There are supermarkets in Swanage a 10 minute drive away. The free roaming bunnies are great. And the meadow full of sheep right next to you also very nice. We hired a BBQ for £1 for 2 nights an absolute bargain. Very friendly folk who run it. Super clean facilities. Beautiful spot

We had a wet and muddy long weekend in Tom's field last June- but even through that- it really is a lovely site- loads of space with choices of sheltered or more open spots. I was a bit let down by the overflowing recycling bins and didn't find it as eco friendly as I'd been lead to believe but we'll go again for sure. In reach of Swanage for the beach, a petting farm in the village for little ones, Corfe Castle for culture, the pub in the next village the square and compass is out of this world and nearby Kimmeridge is a beach spot that can't be beaten

Lovely campsite. The family field is great and my kids (including toddler), love it there. The shop is well stocked and have the essential Dorset ice cream and excellent coffee. Owners are friendly and helpful. The walk from the campsite to Dancing Ledges and along the coast to Swanage isn't too difficult even with small children

We stayed here last weekend and had a fantastic time. The site was very busy ('site full' signs went up on Saturday morning), but the atmosphere remained very chilled out and relaxed with lots of kids running around having the time of their lives! The shop on site was fantastic, selling everything you could possibly want from bread and milk to replacement tent poles. The facilities were basic but seemed adequate, though the showers are run on a token system and you need about 3 tokens to wash your hair as the water comes out at not much more than a dribble!
Location is the best bit, you can be totally car-free with access to footpaths taking you to Corfe, Swanage and Worth Matravers. We walked to catch the steam train at Swanage to Corfe Castle and then walked back to the campsite.
We loved it and will definitely be back.
